Okay, I know you’re going to think I’m crazy here for a minute until I explain. It’s impossible to dye your hair for 25¢ right. But, I’m not your average girl. I’m the kinda girl who wants caviar on a beer budget. Well, since I don’t drink, I’m not exactly SURE how much beer costs, so, I may have to throw that one out. lol.
And you might also be thinking, okay, seriously, there’s no way this wack-a-doo can dye her hair naturally.
Well, if you agreed with either of those statements, you’d be wrong. 🙂
You see, I love sun-kissed gorgeous highlights in the summer, but I also like them in the winter, and I have found a secret trick that makes my hair the perfect shade that I love…and it only costs 25¢ to make. Here’s how I get natural sun-kissed highlights for 25¢.
How I Get Natural Sun-Kissed Highlights for 25¢ – DIY Homemade Hair Hightlights Recipe
All you need for how to highlight hair at home without a kit, is a bottle of Lemon essential oil and some Fractionated Coconut Oil.
I take 2-3 drops of Lemon essential oil mixed with 1-2 TBSP (depending on the length of your hair. My hair is really long – halfway down my back – and I use 1 TBSP) of Fractionated Coconut oil. Mix in a bowl and use a highlights brush. The cool thing about this, is you could literally do the foil treatment and makes ‘streaks’ in your hair, highlights all over, balayage or just plain and simple as I do, just slap all that goodness all over your hair. Then, just touch up your roots as needed. Depending on your hair color, you may not notice a whole lot of difference. For me, I have dark brown hair and I love how the Lemon adds these reddish highlights to my hair. But in my home, I can’t really tell until I get outside or am in photographs.
You will want to do this at night. Let it set on your hair for a good hour or so. If you want your highlights even lighter, just leave it on longer. The cool thing is the sun activates it. The lemon reacts with the sun and the sun gives you those “sun-kissed” highlights. It’s pretty cool. So, if you wanted a more drastic change, just go out into the sun while it’s on. If you have blondish hair, you may need to do that to see results. Like I said, my hair is dark brown, so this is how it works for me.
I discovered this while I was applying a Rosemary moisturizing mask to my hair. I never noticed it until I was photographed. I saw that I really needed a touch-up! lol.
Here are before and after photos. In the first one, you can see that my hair is a more matte, dull brown. Toward the top of my hair, the bangs are very very dark brown and my eyebrows are very very dark as well. I was also NOT using Younique makeup in this photo.
In the after photo, I was using my favorite Younique products (LOVE them!!!) and my hair is more of a chocolate brown and the highlights are very present. I also “dye” my eyebrows for a more natural look, so you can see my eyebrows are lighter as well. I think it just look a lot better. The color sparkles and I really love it.
The thing I love most about this is that I haven’t dyed my hair in years before I started doing this. Like, at least 5 years. I know that the chemicals in hair dye are really bad and known to cause cancer. Sorry, but I like my life and I like my hair color. I just wanted a subtle little change. For me, this is the best of both worlds. I get that subtle change without worrying about it causing me cancer and giving me a ton of toxins I don’t want in my body.
Healthy, beautiful hair for 25 cents. Come on Dollar Store, beat that! 🙂
