If you have an area for a garden, that is awesome.
You can utilize it by planting the fruits/veggies your family eats the most of. Some of my favorites are potatoes, tomatoes, celery, carrots, and onions. If you don’t have a dedicated space for a garden, try to figure out a way that you can.
If you live in an apartment without a garden or cannot have a dedicated space, you can still have some self-sufficiency and grow some organic veggies indoors.
I like to grow green onions on my kitchen window sill so they get plenty of sun and it’s an easy way for beginners.
Making sure I purchase organic onions for this, I simply don’t throw away the white root ends after using them.
Put them in a small amount of water and they will grow on their own. Simply cut what you want to use, as needed. Use to garnish, use in soups, use in your foods. Anyone hungry for baked potatoes now?! 😆
You can use peppermint essential oil and make a spray bottle (10-20 drops of oil per 4 oz of water) and spray the onions so that you don’t get bugs.
The oil acts as a natural barrier. The onions will not taste of peppermint and it’s a very green bug preventative.
Likewise, spiders hate peppermint, so use the same spray to spray your home.
I also like to use Terrashield essential oil spray (made the same way as the peppermint spray) for bees. I spray the outside of my house and car, and they leave my home and car alone.
When you have a good stock flowing of organic fruits/veggies, one of the benefits is to share!
You can find others in your area who do the same and trade. Trade your veggies for theirs. You both win! Or use the veggies to make food and give it to others.
That single mom down the street, that co-worker, that potluck at church.
Remember, don’t let anything go to waste. Use it or share it.
Tip: if you want your onions to grow FASTER, just change the water every day. They’ll suck up all those nutrients and grow like crazy! 🎉
