Making your own homemade essential oil beauty products literally couldn’t be easier and you probably have many of the healthy ingredients already on hand.
I remember when I first started making my own skin care products, toiletries and cosmetics, I didn’t realize how EASY and fun it would be. Now, I’m hooked.
I try to make as many things as I can because the ingredients are usually the same (here’s the top 10 most frequently used ingredients you’ll need if you want to start making your own healthier versions of beauty products. Have these on hand and you can make most DIY recipes).
In this post, I’m going to show you my top 15+ favorite homemade essential oil beauty products!
Top 15+ Homemade Essential Oil Beauty Products
Face Makeup Removal Pads
Ingredients:
- Wide mouth jar
- 1 package cotton pads
- 2 squirts of any liquid facial cleanser
- 2 tablespoons Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 2 drops Lavender essential oil
- 1 cup water
*Avoid contact with eyes.
Directions:
- Mix Fractionated Coconut Oil and cleanser with water.
- Microwave in 10 second increments until melted and well blended.
- Mix in essential oil.
- Place cotton pads in jar.
- Pour liquid mixture over pads in the jar. Press pads down to help soak up the liquid.
Plump Lip Stick
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon beeswax
- 1–2 teaspoons Shea butter
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- 2 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 2 empty lip balm tubes
If you want color:
- For red hues: ¼ teaspoon (or more for color) of beet root powder
- For brown/tan hues: ¼ teaspoon (or more for color) of cocoa powder, a tiny pinch of cinnamon or turmeric to get the shade you want
- For matte texture: ¼ teaspoon bentonite clay–use with a color
Directions:
- On low heat, melt beeswax, Shea butter, and coconut oil together.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool for a few minutes.
- Add essential oil and your color of choice; mix well.
- Pour into lip balm tubes.
Mascara
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ teaspoons plant-based glycerin or aloe vera gel
- 10 capsules activated charcoal opened and emptied
- 3 teaspoons bentonite clay or cosmetic clay
- 1–2 drop Lavender essential oil
- Clean mascara container
- Oral syringe
Directions:
- Mix ingredients together until smooth and consistent.
- Use an oral syringe to fill mascara tube.
- Apply 2–3 coats, allowing each coat to dry before adding another.
Tip: For brown color use cocoa powder instead of activated charcoal.
Gel Eyeliner
Ingredients:
- 2 teaspoons coconut oil
- 2 teaspoons aloe vera gel
- 3 activated charcoal capsules opened and emptied
Directions:
- Melt the coconut oil slightly and combine with aloe vera gel.
- Add activated charcoal.
- Mix all ingredients.
*Store in a dark and cool place
- For blacker liner: Add more activated charcoal to mixture
- For thicker liner: Add less coconut oil to mixture
Natural Foundation
Ingredients:
For the base:
- Arrowroot powder
- 2 drops Melaleuca (Tea Tree) essential oil
Add one or a combination of:
- Cocoa powder
- Ground cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Bronze mica powder
Directions:
- Start with a base of arrowroot powder in a small bowl. Add essential oil and mix until combined.
- Slowly add in one powder or a combination of cocoa powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg or mica powder until you reach your desired tone.
Note: This can vary from 1 tsp. for dark skin to 1 tbs. for light skin.
Tip: If you want more of a compact foundation rather than a powder, you can add some coconut oil to the mixture and press it into a compact. (Start with 5 drops, and continue adding until it reaches your desired texture)
DIY Bubble Bath
Ingredients:
- 1 cup unscented castile soap
- ½ cup vegetable glycerin
- 2 tablespoons water
- 15 drops essential oil of your choice
Directions:
- Combine castile soap, glycerin, and water into a glass bowl
- Add essential oils and stir until it’s well combined
- Pour into a glass container
- To use, add ¼–½ cup of the essential oil bubble bath mixture to warm, running bath water
This mixture is not going to provide the big fluffy bubbles that last a long time since they don’t contain synthetic ingredients that create high amounts of lather or foam, but is chemical free!
Makeup Brush Cleaner
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 5 drops Melaleuca essential oil
- 5 drops Grapefruit essential oil
Directions:
- Add all ingredients to a small bowl and stir.
- Swirl your makeup brush (here’s the one I use) in the liquid mixture until you see the stored particles coming off (about 30 seconds).
- Rub the makeup brush in the palm of your hand to get the makeup off of the brush.
- Pointing the brush down, rinse in cold water. Gently squeeze the brush bristles until the water runs clean.
- Dry your makeup brush on a couple paper towel sheets until dry.
Summer Highlights
Ingredients:
- 8 drops Lemon essential oil
- 8 drops Geranium essential oil
- 2 oz glass spray bottle
Directions:
- Add essential oils to the spray bottle and fill with water.
- Spray it on your hair before you go out into the sun and get great highlights and conditioning.
After Sun Cooling Spray
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup witch hazel
- 2 tbsp. pure Aloe Vera Gel
- 10 drops Lavender essential oil
- 10 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 4 oz glass spray bottle
Directions:
- Combine all ingredients and mix well.
- Pour into spray bottle and shake well before applying to the skin. This mixture soothes the skin on a hot summers’ day.
Geranium Hair Mask
Ingredients:
- 1–2 egg
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 5 drops Geranium essential oil
Directions:
- Mix eggs with olive oil. Add in honey and Geranium and mix until creamy.
- Apply mask from roots to ends of your hair until completely covered.
- Cover your hair with plastic wrap or a shower cap and leave for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Rinse with warm water and shampoo until hair is no longer sticky. Use conditioner if necessary.
Homemade Hot Oil Hair Treatment
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 6 drops of Peppermint essential oil
- 4 drops Rosemary or Melaleuca essential oils
- 2 teaspoons jojoba oil
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
Directions:
- In a medium saucepan, bring 1–2 cups of water to a boil. Reduce to low heat and keep water on a simmer.
- Place all ingredients, but essential oils in a heat-proof bowl and place in the pot of simmering water. Let the oil heat up and simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Remove oil from heat. You want the oil nice and warm, but not boiling hot. Add essential oils. Tip: Make sure to cover your shoulders in case of oil staining.
- Dip your fingertips into the oil and gently massage the oil from scalp to the ends. When all the oil is used, cover your hair with a shower cap.
- Shampoo your hair. Tip: You may need to shampoo your hair twice; using a conditioner is optional.
Tip: For best results, add a hot damp towel over the shower cap. Leave it on for 30 minutes.
Rosemary Lavender Hair Rinse
Ingredients:
- 4 cups water
- 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 5 drops Rosemary essential oil
- 5 drops Lavender essential oil
Directions:
- Bring the water to boil in a large pot and remove from heat.
- Cool and then add apple cider vinegar and Lavender and Rosemary essential oils.
- Pour into a glass jar, seal, and shake. Let sit for at least 2 hours (Leaving it overnight is also recommended). Strain.
- When ready to use, pour a little over your hair and massage into your scalp. Rinse with cool water.
Bronzing Lotion Stick
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup beeswax
- 1/4 cup shea butter
- 2 tablespoons cocoa butter
- 2 tablespoons grapeseed oil
- 1 teaspoon Vitamin E
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, for bronzer (you could also use 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder)
- 20 drops of your favorite essential oil
- Clear push up containers
Directions:
- Add all the ingredients (except the cinnamon and essential oil) in a glass jar or bowl and place in a saucepan with 1-1.5″ of boiling water.
- Stir ingredients until well combined (approx. 5-10 minutes) using a popsicle stick for easier cleanup.
- Once the mixture is melted, let it sit for 3 minutes to cool off.
- Add the essential oil of your choice and stir.
- For bronzing effect, add in 1 TSP of ground cinnamon and stir until well combined.
- Pour mixture into clear push up containers, making sure that the inside is screwed all the way down.
- Let it cool down at least 2 hours before use. Use in the winter without the cinnamon added as a moisturing stick!
Homemade Herbal Hairspray
Ingredients:
- 1 cup water
- 4 teaspoons sugar (more or less depending on how strong you want the hairspray hold to be)
- Glass spray bottle
- 2 drops Geranium essential oil
- 2 drops Lavender essential oil
- 2 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 2 drops Rosemary essential oil
- 2 drops Clary Sage essential oil
Directions:
- In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Bring mixture to a boil and stir until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from the heat and cool completely.
- Pour the essential oils in a glass bottle.
- Pour the cooled sugar water mixture into the glass spray bottle.
- You’re done! Use in your hair as you would any other hairspray.
DIY Essential Oil Hair Wax
Ingredients:
- .75 ounces beeswax
- .5 ounce shea butter
- .75 ounces Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 10 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 10 drops Rosemary essential oil
- Empty tin
For harder hair wax, you’ll want to use 1 ounce of beeswax and .5 ounces of Fractionated Coconut Oil.
For softer hair wax, use .75 ounces of shea butter and 1 ounce of Fractionated Coconut Oil.
Directions:
- Combine all the ingredients into a glass container, except for the essential oils.
- Place a jar in a saucepan with 1-1.5 inches of boiling water.
- Stir the ingredients until melted and thoroughly combined. Then remove from the heat and let the mixture rest for three minutes.
- Add your essential oils and stir.
- Pour the mixture in an empty tin or glass jar with a lid.
- Let the hair wax rest and cool off for 1-2 hours and you’re done.
- To use, apply a small amount to your fingers and style as desired. A little wax goes a long way, so just use a little bit at a time.
DIY Hair Perfume
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup Rose Water
- 1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
- 5 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil
- 4 drops Rosemary essential oil
- 5 drops Sandalwood essential oil
- 3 drops Lavender essential oil
- 4 drops Grapefruit essential oil
- Fine Mist Glass Spray Bottle
Directions:
- Add all ingredients in a fine mist glass spray bottle (must be glass due to the particular oils being used in this recipe).
- Add more or less essential oils depending on your scent strength preference.
- Shake and spray on hair as desired.
