Bitterness is something that we are all tempted to do from time to time.
Someone steals your parking space at the store on purpose.
Friends and family don’t treat you how they should.
Your kids are older and don’t see all the sacrifices you’ve made for them their whole life and treat you with contempt, disdain even.
There are a million chances for you not to forgive and to harbor bitterness in your heart.
I get it.
Sometimes I’m tempted to get bitter too.
My ex-husband asked me to give up God or he’d leave me. I told him I wouldn’t give up God for him or anyone else.
That was around 15 YEARS ago! And I’m still single.
Meanwhile, he’s already had many affairs, ended up marrying one of them and now they are divorced. He’s done such bad, terrible things yet I’ve been good and still sitting here alone.
It doesn’t seem fair. Not that I’d like to have affairs or marry the wrong person, not at all, but that I’d like to have someone, to be married again.
But it seems like every Christian guy I meet ends up being a jerk or not obeying God. They get exiled, punished by God, and I just want a guy who is willing to obey the Lord at any cost, like I am. Seems hard to find.
It’s tempting to just become bitter about it. To ask God why I can’t have someone. When the whole reason I am single in the first place is BECAUSE I obeyed the Bible and chose God over man (Acts 5:29).
It’s not easy. It’s tempting and you may be tempted too. Feeling wronged about something. Letting unforgiveness take hold in your heart, which easily turns into bitterness.
But the truth is we MUST forgive. We must not allow bitterness to creep in because it destroys our whole mood and outlook on life.
So instead of saying, “I’m alone and I don’t wanna be”, I can be thankful instead that I found out the guys are jerks before marriage! That I have been spared a lifetime of being with the wrong person, and those sinful attributes in the other person came out when they did so that I’m not deceived. Because the last thing I wanna do is marry the wrong person!
Instead of looking at the situation like, “Oh woe is me”, I can be thankful.
Thankful God provided (allowed) a way of escape from my marriage by my ex-husband asking me to give up God, revealing his true feelings and intentions about Christ, and that I’ve been spared along the way by not dating someone wrong for me.
Ultimately, God is good and He cares about us, even if the situation doesn’t seem like it and in times of bitterness, we need to remember that.
God knows exactly what He’s doing and He’s always there to put us first and create and cause situations to happen that are for our best, and that glorify Him.
Therefore, bitterness is sin because it’s like saying to God: “You don’t know what you’re doing”, which is blasphemy!
We must be very careful with our feelings and not let them dictate our lives, but rather line our lives up with the Bible, the Holy Word of God.
