Today’s Independence Day. Happy 4th of July to you all!
Thinking about Independence Day started me wondering, how independent are you really?
How Independent Are You Really?
When it comes to finances, that financial curtain that most people like to keep up…when you pull back that curtain, to the secret places that is your bills, are you independent?
Do you balance your checkbook frantically every week, wondering if you’ll have enough money to pay for this or that.
When you go grocery shopping, do you add up the amount in your shopping cart as you go to make sure you have enough?
Do you say, “No,” to going out to eat or doing fun things with friends because you can’t afford to? Making up some lame excuse that sounds believable so you don’t lose face to your friends.
Listen, I’ve been there. It’s a hard place to be.
Several years ago, I was homeless. I was in $30,000+ debt and I couldn’t get out. I was drowning. Even though I was paying more than the minimum payments, debt ate away at my life, my energy, and my soul.
I always felt like I was a slave to my debt. It controlled me. It made decisions for me. I wasn’t independent. I didn’t have freedom.
Fast forward a little bit, I started making $18k/year and was living paycheck to paycheck. My car died and I couldn’t even afford to replace it! I had no money, no backup savings, and no company would lend to me.
What do you do when you’re in that situation?
You start looking at EVERYTHING differently.
One of my friends at the time…we went to Goodwill, looking around at used stuff together one time. I noticed she spent an awful long time in the book section. Really??? Does anyone like books THAT MUCH?! “Come on…the good stuff is over here,” I jokingly told her. She disagreed. She said, “No…everyone ELSE is over there, the good stuff is RIGHT HERE,” and motioned to the books.
I didn’t get it. I don’t need more books to take up clutter, I need to find stuff to furnish my teeny ant-sized apartment on the cheap!
Later on, away from the store, she shared with me a secret that opened up my entire world to new possibilities. She said that she made $10,000/month selling used books on Amazon.
My jaw dropped!
She was good at what she did too. Every single morning, she’d go over to the thrift shops and find books to sell. She’d go yard saleing and find books.
You know what I did?
I started looking for books. I thought she was crazy. I didn’t believe her, but I wanted to know for myself, if there was actually something to it or if she was just pulling my leg.
She was right. It wasn’t a joke. I started buying and selling college textbooks on Half.com (a subsidiary of eBay). I’d pick up college textbooks for 50¢ and resell them for $30-$125!
But books wasn’t all I wanted to do. I wanted to know if there were more things I could sell and suddenly, I found myself into this entire world of reselling. And I got REAL good at it. Over the years, I landed on my own little niche in eBay, selling Littlest Pet Shops. I was doing quite well for myself, surviving. Paying my bills, but still living paycheck to paycheck.
That is…until I started blogging.
When I started blogging (tears), my whole world changed and for the first time in my LIFE, I WASN’T living paycheck to paycheck.
In fact, last month, I made $57k in one month (income report here!)
Blogging has changed everything for me and I believe that it can do the same for you. That’s why I’m so passionate about introducing every mom to blogging.
Whether you start a hobby blog and just get out all your frustrations, connect with others who feel like you do, or have a place to share all the cool things your kids do…OR you want to start a money making blog so YOUR family doesn’t have to live paycheck to paycheck anymore, blogging does all that and more.
I found myself in blogging. I found a voice. I found I’m not alone. I found you. And if you listen, really listen, it only takes that one simple tip, that one simple secret that your friend shares with you, that leads you on a journey that (tears) will change your life forever. My book friend did that for me and maybe, just maybe, I am that friend to you.
- Don’t you want independence?
- Don’t you want to be your OWN boss?
- Don’t you want to be home with your kids, spending time with them and not feeling tied to your bank account all the time, like it owns you?
- Don’t you want MORE out of life?
- Your voice, a unique voice, don’t you want it to be heard?
- Don’t you wanna make your mark on the world, leave it a little better than when you got here?
- Leave your kids a legacy of your thoughts, values, opinions?
- Don’t you want to teach others something?
- Feel like you’re a PART of something bigger than yourself?
If you said, “Yes,” to any of those questions, I’m telling you right now, you OWE IT TO YOURSELF to find out if blogging is your thing. If it’s the thing that changes YOUR life and your family’s life forever. Because you will NEVER KNOW…unless you TRY! And isn’t that what we tell our kids every day? But, so often, not taking our OWN advice.
Today, on Independence Day, I wanted to ask you a simple question….how independent are you really?
If something comes up, an emergency, your car breaks, your kid needs braces, something, anything, are you financially prepared? Are you financially independent? I’m not promising you that blogging is your meal ticket. Blogging takes a LOT of hard work. It’s like a job. But I don’t know any other job that after three years, you’re making $57k/month, do you?
Even in my first year blogging, by month 12, I was making $10k/month. Even if you only made $1,000/month, how would that change your life? Isn’t that worth fighting for? Isn’t that dream, YOUR DREAM, worth going after?
Are you independent, dear loved one, and most importantly, do you WANT to be?
If you do, and you think blogging might be right for you, I encourage you to listen to that still small voice, and start a blog.
