These top essential oil crafts for kids to make are PERFECT ideas and activities for summertime.
Not sure what to create first?
A great way to decide is to take some slips of paper, write each DIY craft on one slip, and put all the slips into a jar. Have your children take turns picking slips out of the jar until all the slips are gone and you’ve made all the crafts you want.
You could even have them earn slips by being good or being nice to their siblings.
The cool thing is that the recipes are super simple and easy to make and you most likely have these things already in your home!
Best Homemade Top Essential Oil Crafts for Kids to Make
Chalksicles (sidewalk chalk in the shape of popsicles)
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup + 3 tablespoons of plaster of paris
- 1/3 cup water
- Few drops of food coloring paste (you can use traditional liquid food coloring, but sometimes the colors won’t stay true)
- Popsicle silicone mold
- Popsicle sticks
- 4 drops of Lemon essential oil
(recipe makes 1 chalksicle)
Directions:
In a plastic cup, mix the plaster, Lemon essential oil, and water until a paste forms. Mix in the food coloring paste for the color you desire.
Place the plaster mix inside the mold with a plastic spoon; insert a popsicle stick in the middle
After about 45 minutes, the popsicle chalks will harden enough to take out of the molds. Dry upright in a cup until they are completely hardened.
DIY Bubbles
Ingredients:
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons Dr. Bronner’s Castile Liquid Soap (I get mine cheap from ePantry)
- Pipe cleaner (to make bubble wand)
Directions:
Mix sugar into warm water until it’s dissolved.
Add castile soap, and stir until combined.
Polka Dot Slime
Ingredients:
- 2 five-ounce bottles of clear school glue
- Liquid starch
- Craft pom poms
- 3 drops Lavender essential oil
Directions:
Pour glue into a bowl along with Lavender essential oil.
Add liquid starch a little bit at a time (in tablespoons) and stir well in between each tablespoon.
(Always shake the liquid starch container well before use. Keep adding the liquid starch until the slime is no longer stringy or sticking to the bowl).
Knead to make it uniform, then add your pom poms and knead them in as well.
DIY Flubber
Ingredients:
- 2 bottles white school glue (approx. a cup total)
- 1/4 + 1/8 teaspoon Borax
- Essential oil of choice
- Food Coloring
- Warm Water
Borax is natural, however, it is not safe to eat. Be sure the kids aren’t ingesting the flubber as you can’t omit the Borax in this recipe.
Directions:
In a bowl, combine the glue and 3/4 cup warm water.
Add the food coloring.
Add the essential oil of your choice.
In a second bowl, combine the Borax and 2/3 cups warm water. Be sure to add the exact amount (1/4 + 1/8) as specified or the flubber will come out stiff and won’t stretch good.
Slowly pour the glue mixture into the Borax mixture.
Mix together with your hands until it forms a ball.
DIY Bouncy Balls
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 teaspoon Borax
- 1/8 cup of clear glue
- Glitter
- 2 drops of Lavender essential oil
Directions:
In a plastic cup, mix together water and borax. Once the Borax dissolves, set aside.
In a small bowl, mix together glue, Lavender essential oil, and glitter until well combined.
Add glue substance to the water mixture; stir with a popsicle stick until it forms a clump of glue (the glue will not combine with the water. Swirl it around until the glue becomes solid).
Take the glue out and place it on a paper towel. Fold the paper towel over it to dry the water.
Play with it in your hands so all the bubbles release, and the mixture forms a ball (use a circle silicone tray to mold them in- or two round tablespoons to get the perfect ball shape).
DIY Kids Paints
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoon ground herb {shown below}
- 2 tablespoons vegetable glycerine. If you don’t have this, you could substitute with an egg white or water, however if you substitute it, the shelf-life of the paints are only a day. The shelf-life of the vegetable glycerine is 6 months.
- 1 teaspoon bentonite clay
- 3 drops essential oil of your choice
Beet Root Powder: Red (Cinnamon essential oil could be used)
Turmeric Powder: Orange (Orange essential oil could be used) Be careful using turmeric, as it’s notorious for staining.
Ground Mustard Seed: Light Yellow (Lemon essential oil could be used)
Skullcap Herb: Light Green (Lime essential oil could be used)
Spirulina: Dark Green (Peppermint essential oil could be used)
Bilberry Fruit: Purple (Lavender essential oil could be used)
Black Walnut: Gray

Arrowroot: White
Directions:
Combine the powdered herb, clay, and vegetable glycerine in a bowl.
Stir well.
Add essential oil of your choice and mix.
Store in an airtight container.
If you used the vegetable glycerine base, you can use the paints either with water or without to get the desired effect you want.
Without added water, the colors are more vibrant.
With adding water, the colors come out more pastel-looking.
